Good Memories from Northern Light

In-depth Review

Artist: Northern Light™

Latest release - Northern Summer

Northern Summer continues the Northern Light tradition of chamber pop expanding the sound brought forth on their previous releases 49th Parallel and Sweet Sunny Day. This 14 track album was recorded almost entirely with traditional instruments, staying true to symphonic treatment and arrangement. We hope you enjoy our latest effort as we strive to provide entertainment and an enjoyable listening experience.

49th Parallel

Northern Light is also happy to share with you its previous cd, "49th Parallel." This effort involved over two years of hard work and dedication. The commitment to excellence was so keen that some times whole tracks or sections as well as mixes were scrapped and redone to meet the high standards and expectations of the group.

The arrangements employ actual instruments, instead of synths which allowed for innovation with respect to miking, room effects and overall sound. Vocals were performed with Northern Light together on mike which promoted a spontaneous feel. In their original songs Northern Light alludes to universal themes and frames them in their native northern context - a new concept for the listener.

Here it is - when you get this cd, it's not unlike buying a home, built the old-fashioned way, with plaster instead of drywall, with wood molding instead of metal or plastic - like a traditional tudor, "49th Parallel" is built to be beautiful and last. Take your ears to this musical place and you'll say you're home!

Sweet Sunny Day

Whether you're part of today's RAVE generation or a devotee of the early days of pure rock, "Sweet Sunny Day" by Northern Light is going to hit a solid chord with you. Returning to the studio after an intense writing period , Northern Light's performance hits a groove that's as sharp as the laser that burnt the disk. This album presents two covers ("Hushabye/Little Star" and Dick & Deedee's "The Mountain's High") along with eight new songs by composer David Sandler.

The mountain IS high, the valley IS deep and these songs will no doubt bring you across to the other side. Both cover songs feature great harmonies and scintillating electric guitar treatments. Northern Light's title song "Sweet Sunny Day" is reminds one of the great songs of the American rock tradition: visions of a natural world where we can escape our technoindustrial storms. It has a beat that goes right through your brain, guitars that wrap you in exquisite tones and a bass line that holds it all together. It is one of those songs that grabs you from the very first measure.

This disc opens with "Number 30", a song about the kind of love at first sight that everyone experiences at least once in their life. "Number 30" provides imagery which resonates through the album…the motion of our imaginations…the sharing of life's vitality with someone new and special (or old and special). Whether the band takes us on a date to the stars or a journey as characters in Van Gogh's masterpiece, the experience ties Northern Light's music to our emotions with great success.

It is indeed refreshing to find a set of songs that provide words to think about and a sound to remember. This album can be played as loud as you want or as soft as you need.

Northern Light proves that the Fender Stratocaster and the Gibson Les Paul guitar are thriving in the late 90's. And if you let the bass line carry you along, you will hear a sophisticated counterpoint to this album's precision melodies. The instruments were laid down simultaneously with a live room feel, particularly enhancing the sound.

Perhaps the most impressive part of Northern Light is their vocals. Soulful harmonies, sweet crescendos and contra melodies make these songs fulfilling over and over again
